Get Back on Track this World Spine Day!

Today is World Spine Day!

Each year on 16 October, people from around the world come together on this day to raise awareness of the importance of spinal health.

Each World Spine Day presents its own unique theme, and this year the theme could not be timelier. The 2020 theme, ‘Back on Track’, was inspired by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact this has had on our spinal health and wellbeing.

Despite restrictions having protected communities around the world, they have inevitably impacted people’s ability to stay active and mobile. Back on Track celebrates and encourages communities to reactivate and revitalise their bodies by getting out and focusing on effective spine care.

Back on Track highlights the importance of exercise, posture, movement and good self-care to ensure a healthy spine. Here are a few simple ways to help you regain control over your health.

Exercise

With 56% of all Australians are not sufficiently physically active, they could be potentially missing out on the positive effects of exercise including stretching, strengthening and repairing of muscles that help support the back. Regular exercise can also reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, build stronger bones, increase your energy, improve sleep patterns and so much more

Sleep and Eat Right

During long periods of lockdown, your regular routines may have been disrupted either by working from home or even working longer hours. A key way to help get back on track is by getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night and eating a balanced diet, helping you get back to your best self.

Stretching

Moving less or working more? It’s important to remember the impact that certain activities can have on your spinal health. The Straighten Up app and the Straighten Up exercises are a great tool to help enhance your spinal health and wellbeing. The three-minute exercise program on the app can be done anytime, anywhere and help improve your posture, as well as stabilise core muscle groups.
